Specifically, Larsen and Seid- man included only the masculine and feminine items of the BSRI, but not the neutral items. Yet including only masculine and feminine items is problematic because the categorization of individuals via a median split into a gender-schematic and a gender-aschematic group is based on these items. Therefore, the correlations between masculine items and feminine items are very likely to be high and negative for the gender-schematic group be- cause subjects with high values on masculine items traditional males have low values on feminine items, whereas subjects with low values on the mas- culine items traditional females have high values on the feminine items.

Conversely, correlations between masculine and feminine items are likely to be strongly positive for the gender-aschematic group, because androgynous subjects have high values on both masculine items and feminine item, whereas undifferentiated subjects have low values on both masculine and feminine items.

As a consequence, we would expect to find bipolar factors for the gender-aschematic group, but unipolar factors for the gender-aschematic group. In other words, as Paulhus pointed out, the study is not a test of the construct validity of the BSRI, but an artifact of the categoriza- tion procedure and the items being used in the analysis. Our results clearly showed that Larsen and Seidman's results were due to the fact of only analyzing masculine and feminine items, and of combining in each analyses two heterogeneous groups, namely androgynous and undifferentiated subjects, in one analysis, and masculine and femi- nine traditional subjects, in another analysis.

The data of these analyses are available from the authors upon request. Because subjects' categorization as gender schematic or gender aschematic is solely based on the masculine and feminine items of the inventory, an analysis that includes neutral items allows us to test the BSRI's validity. If the BSRI distinguishes between gender- schematic and gender-aschematic individuals, then we would expect to find unipolar factors for the gender-aschematic group, because gender-aschematic individuals are hypothesized to encode masculine and feminine items in the same way that they encode neutral items.

In contrast, because gender sche- ma theory claims that traditionally sex-typed individuals respond to the sex typing of the masculine and feminine items of the BSRI and view masculine and feminine characteristics as mutually exclusive characteristics, we would expect to find bipolar factors for the gender-schematic group. The median age of the sample was Subjects did not get paid for their participation and did not receive course credit.

The respons- es of 3 subjects who did not complete all of the items of the questionnaire were excluded from subsequent analyses. Bem's median split procedure was used to categorize subjects into four groups. The responses of androgynous and undifferentiated individuals were com- bined to form a gender-aschematic group. The responses of the cross-sex- typed group were excluded from subsequent analyses. RESULTS In order to facilitate a comparison with Larsen and Seidman's find- ings, the same factor extraction and rotation procedures were used and the 4Subjects who scored at the median on either the M or F scale but not on both scales were catego- rized as traditionally sex typed if their score on the sex-congruent scale was above the median; they were categorized as cross-sex typed if their score on the sex-incongruent scale was above the median.

The remainder of subjects who scored at the median on both scales were catego- rized as androgynous if their scores were above the means on the M and F scale, and as un- differentiated if their scores were below the means on both scales. However, factor analyses excluding these cases were also performed and revealed virtually identical factor patterns. Two principal factor analyses with iterations were conducted separately for the sample of traditionally sex-typed and the sample of androgynous and undifferentiated subjects; the analyses were performed on the intercorrelations of the 60 items of the BSRI and sex of subject.

Table I shows all loadings greater than. The fac- tor patterns of the first two factors are clearly different for the two groups. Factors 1 and 2 of the gender-schematic group, which accounted for of the common variance, were strongly bipolar, with feminine and mascu- line items loading on opposite poles. In addition, sex of subject and the items masculine and feminine had moderate and high loadings on both factors, and even the neutral items seemed incorporated to some extent into this bipo- lar structure.

For the gender-aschematic group, on the other hand, the first two factors, which accounted for of the common variance, may be in- terpreted as "gender aschematicity" factors, i. In addition, sex of subject and the items masculine and feminine did not have substantial loadings on either factor.

In other words, the gender-aschematic group did not seem to respond to the sex typ- ing of the masculine and feminine items. The third and fourth factors are not quite as easy to interpret. The third factor of the gender-schematic group, with two masculine items loading posi- tively and three items items loading negatively, possessed to some extent the bipolarity of the first two factors.

However, several neutral items also load- ed on the factor. Finally, the fourth factor, with highly positive loadings of the items feminine and sex of subject, a negative loading of the item masculine, and positive or nega- tive loadings of some other masculine items may be tentatively interpreted as defining the ideal of a "liberated, independent women of the eighties"- a woman that sees herself as feminine, independent, and self-sufficient, but not as analytical.

The differences between the two factor structures were also statistical- ly examined by computing congruence coefficients between the rotated fac- tor patterns of the two groups.

Because the distribution of the congruence coefficient is unknown but suspected to be considerably greater than zero for randomly generated data, only congruence coefficients of. Table Although the procedure used in our study may not seem to be the most powerful validation procedure, and did not test the BSRI's external validity, our results provided evidence for the inter- nal validity of the inventory. Future studies should further explore the issue of the BSRI's construct validity and its compatibility with gender schema theory, e.

Only traditionally sex-typed individuals seem to respond to the sex typing of the masculine and feminine items of the BSRI. Androgynous and undifferentiated individuals, on the other hand, do not seem to encode sex-typed items in gender-related terms; they seem to treat sex-typed items as if they were neutral. In other words, all individuals seem to agree that certain traits are considered masculine or feminine in our culture, and this fact enabled Bem to construct her inventory.

The well-known social psychologist Sandara Bem developed a sex role inventory to measure different aspects of hypothesized psychological gender traits. This measure has not been without criticism see references , and one can question its usefulness.

Nevertheless, it has been a popular test and can be of use in student projects. It has been argued it is still a valid measure today by some cf. The scores are given on the scales, thus if you have a score of 4, you are exactly in the middle.

If people score above median on both scales, they are considered to be "androgynous". A good paper with details about score is that of Hoffman and Borders, which you can read for free from here.
